Another Sunset at Portland Head Light

May 14, 2013

Always searching for a unique comp, I climbed down as close to the edge of the rocks on the east side of the Portland Head Light as I safely could, and looked up to see some cool pretty cool lines leading up to the sunset sky. It didn’t quite blow up like I was hoping, [...]

A view toward Boston (the skyline there about a quarter of the way in from the left) at sunset from Crystal Cove, a small harbor in Winthrop, Massachusetts.

Moss Glen Falls

May 9, 2013

This is Moss Glen Falls in Granville, VT (not Stowe — interestingly, there is a Moss Glen Falls there as well). One of the prettiest sets of falls I’ve seen in New England. There were a lot of cool elements in the foreground that I wanted to include — tried to get a few of [...]

The Giant’s Causeway

May 9, 2013

This is the famous Giant’s Causeway of Northern Ireland, an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of volcanic eruption some 50+ million years ago. Very cool. Some excellent moody cloud cover helped to convince me to process this one as a b/w.

Sunset in Joshua Tree National Park

May 4, 2013

This is sunset at an area of Joshua Tree National Park called White Tank. When the sun sets, the afterglow on the granite is just spectacular.

The calm, hazy morning from East Boston gave way to simpler imagery that day.

Sailing Stone at the Racetrack

May 4, 2013

A shot from Death Valley’s Racetrack Playa. Wish I had found this comp earlier when the pinks were enveloping the sky, but that’s alright; got some cool alpenglow instead.

Sunset at Portland Head Light

May 4, 2013

I wanted to find a different composition than the norm, so after scrambling around for a while, I decided to focus on those rocks and lines, letting the lighthouse beacon act as an afterthought.

Sunrise at Ned’s Point Lighthouse

May 2, 2013

Sunrise at a pretty little spot called Ned’s Point, in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. I was afraid these clouds weren’t going to light up at all — they remained gray for while — then all of a sudden pinks and oranges and reds swept over them them like wildfire.

The Pemaquid Point Lighthouse

April 21, 2013

The sky was devoid of interest this day at Pemaquid Point, so I set up shop near this little overhang and let the lines do the talking, deciding to time my capture when the final bit of light was warming up the lighthouse.

One of my favorite little spots in New England, this is a view of the Annisquam Lighthouse in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

A shot of the Milky Way appearing behind Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Bristol, Maine, on the most absolutely perfectly clear night of star shooting I could ask for.

Keys View Sunrise, Joshua Tree National Park

April 14, 2013

A hazy morning sunrise at Keys View, a nice overlook in Joshua Tree National Park. The highest peak on the left there is San Jacinto, a good 10,800 feet up. San Gorgonio, at 11,500 feet, is the next tall one at about center frame I believe.

Milky Way over Badwater Basin

March 24, 2013

This is an early morning blue hour shot of the Milky Way rising over Badwater. At this time of year (February), it’s only visible for a short while before sunrise, which I think helps create something pretty cool and unique, in that it’s not just pitch black throughout the shot.

Moonlit Arch Rock

March 23, 2013

Joshua Tree National Park’s Arch Rock. The moon was a quarter full, so I focused on getting a shot of the moonlit rocks and pristine cloudless sky. I especially like the lines, curves and shadows dominating the image.

Sunset from East Boston

March 20, 2013

The sun sets directly behind the city of Boston from this vantage point in East Boston in the winter, so I thought that would be nice. I was assaulted by brutal cold winds for a half hour or so, but it was nice watching the clouds quickly fly by, changing color as the sun sunk [...]

Under a Pier, a Sunset over Boston

March 20, 2013

Treated to a beauty of a sunset at Squantum Point Park in Quincy, Massachusetts. I set the camera up in the water here under this pier with a view of Boston’s iconic Hancock and Prudential towers in the distance.

Sunset Cliffs Twilight

March 19, 2013

Blue Hour shot at a spot on the San Diego coast called Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. Gorgeous views abound, and tons of great foreground to include in a good sunset shot. Unfortunately for me, the skies were clear and boring, so I focused my efforts on the cool patterns and cliff faces looking north.

Sunrise over San Diego

March 18, 2013

A view of San Diego’s waterfront at the Embarcadero Marina Park. Super pretty views here — northeast to the city, south to Coronado, southeast to that big, long Coronado Bridge. Very peaceful and quiet in the early hours of the day, except for a runner or two passing behind me every so often as I [...]

Sunrise at the Racetrack

March 17, 2013

One of the famous “sailing stones” at Death Valley’s Racetrack Playa. To my right was considerable fiery color, but I decided to turn around a little and shoot the other way. I like the color contrasts in the sky and the way the mountains on the opposite side are beginning to light up a bit.

The Mesquite Dunes of Death Valley

March 17, 2013

At Death Valley’s Mesquite Dunes, I thought a rare-from-me monochrome treatment would work here, given the overcast, soft-lit conditions.
