This is the famous Giant’s Causeway of Northern Ireland, an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of volcanic eruption some 50+ million years ago. Very cool. Some excellent moody cloud cover helped to convince me to process this one as a b/w.
This is sunset at an area of Joshua Tree National Park called White Tank. When the sun sets, the afterglow on the granite is just spectacular.

Sunrise at a pretty little spot called Ned’s Point, in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. I was afraid these clouds weren’t going to light up at all — they remained gray for while — then all of a sudden pinks and oranges and reds swept over them them like wildfire.
The sky was devoid of interest this day at Pemaquid Point, so I set up shop near this little overhang and let the lines do the talking, deciding to time my capture when the final bit of light was warming up the lighthouse.

This is an early morning blue hour shot of the Milky Way rising over Badwater. At this time of year (February), it’s only visible for a short while before sunrise, which I think helps create something pretty cool and unique, in that it’s not just pitch black throughout the shot.
Joshua Tree National Park’s Arch Rock. The moon was a quarter full, so I focused on getting a shot of the moonlit rocks and pristine cloudless sky. I especially like the lines, curves and shadows dominating the image.

Blue Hour shot at a spot on the San Diego coast called Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. Gorgeous views abound, and tons of great foreground to include in a good sunset shot. Unfortunately for me, the skies were clear and boring, so I focused my efforts on the cool patterns and cliff faces looking north.

One of the famous “sailing stones” at Death Valley’s Racetrack Playa. To my right was considerable fiery color, but I decided to turn around a little and shoot the other way. I like the color contrasts in the sky and the way the mountains on the opposite side are beginning to light up a bit.
At Death Valley’s Mesquite Dunes, I thought a rare-from-me monochrome treatment would work here, given the overcast, soft-lit conditions.
